Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was raised within Long Beach California. DuVernay was instilled with the desire to explore her love of art through her aunt Denise at the age of a small child. DuVernay worked as a night nurse so that she could give her mother the time she needed in her days to be able to enjoy art, literature and theatre. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered through her example that art can be an avenue for action. DuVernay was raised by an aunt who was conscious of her social status and taught her how to utilize the arts to find a way to express her feelings. While DuVernay grew up in Compton with her parents, she spent every summer at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the Civil Rights marches that were historic across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in close proximity to Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama would later inspire her to direct a movie that focused on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. After graduating she attended the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay developed an interest in television journalism during her time as a college student. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being given an assignment to watch the residence and scrutinizing the waste of one of jurors. Her disappointment was evident in her journalism tasks and decided that she would switch to the world of public relations. DuVernay was brought on straight from college to be an intern at an unassuming studio. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her agency for public relations, in the year 1999. Apart from PR, the agency also established a range of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as those like the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
